Too often, law enforcement or fire responders are the first contact for people in need of mental health services. In our current response system, we may send a police officer or fire responder to a person struggling with opioids, a hoarding situation, or individuals with developmental disabilities. Police officers and fire responders may be limited in the resources they can provide.
The City hired a social worker to work with the health, police, and fire departments and connect residents to social service providers and conduct follow-ups with cases and clients. Now, problems arising from mental health struggles or substance use disorders can be handled by a professional who can help identify long-term strategies and prevent arrests or incarceration. This has improved health outcomes for Wauwatosa residents, minimized friction with police officers, and helped to prevent crimes before they occur.
